Today marks the beginning of the 20th Anniversary screenings of The Return of the King. The reception has been outstanding – what started as a single night event at a few hundred theaters has exploded into screenings at more than 1,000 theaters over 7 full days. While many of the screenings are sold out, new screens and showtimes keep popping up. If the showing you want to see is sold out, call the theater and ask them to add another screen! Especially if you have a gaggle of hobbits or orcs you can bring to the party…
Legion M is proud to be a part of this event, in partnership with Warner Bros, Fathom Events and Lost Odyssey. We put up some of the money required to get these films into theaters and partnered with Lost Odyssey to provide the bonus footage (featuring Elijah Wood) that will play in conjunction with the film. In exchange, we get a percentage of all ticket sales, meaning that Legion M earns revenue from every ticket sold.
Just as importantly, the opportunity to work with a specialty distributor like Fathom Events, a major studio like Warner Bros, and a wonderful partner like Lost Odyssey are all great steps as Legion M continues to “level up” on our quest to DO GREAT THINGS!
The business of theatrical releases has been completely upended over the past 5 years and we expect it will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Trends that began with the rise of streaming dramatically accelerated when the entire industry shut down during the pandemic. Today, theaters are continuing to feel the effect of supply chain disruptions (the movies you see in theaters today are typically the result of what people were working on 1-3 years ago), while the “experience economy” comes roaring back with people hungry for social experiences after the isolation of COVID. These are the sort of dynamics that can be extremely disruptive for large entrenched businesses...but have potential to be great opportunities for small, nimble companies like Legion M. We’re excited to be in the mix, learning all we can and trying to make the most of it!
So with that in mind, we encourage you to take a look at the showtimes near you, round up some friends, and go see one of the most epic action adventure movies of all time the way it was meant to be seen: ON THE BIG SCREEN. It’s been 20 years since the initial release – who knows when you’ll get a chance like this again!
Finally, when you go to the show, be sure to GET THERE EARLY. They have a great pre show (including a Legion M video!), and Fathom Events start at the designated time. I.e. If showtime is 7:30, it starts at 7:30, not at 7:55 after 25 minutes of trailers.

This April 13th and 19th, Legion M is excited to partner with Fathom Events, Warner Bros., and Lost Odyssey to bring you The Extended Edition of The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. View the film as it was meant to be seen: ON THE BIG SCREEN at a theater near you.
Legion M is proud to be a part of this 20th anniversary celebration of one of the greatest films ever made. Each screening will be preceded by a recorded introduction from Elijah Wood, who will discuss the lasting impact of The Lord Of The Rings. Fans will also enjoy exclusive coverage of the new The Lord Of The Rings tabletop game featuring a celebrity cast of players, in benefit of Extra Life For Kids, in conjunction with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LEGION M?
Legion M is proud to be a part of this 20th anniversary celebration, and excited to work with Fathom Events, Warner Brothers, and Lost Odyssey. Our deal involves both the element of risk (we're fronting some of the costs for this special engagement) and reward (we get a percentage of the ticket sales). Our hope is that Legion M can make a meaningful difference in ticket sales, and help drive some revenue for the company.
More importantly, we see this as an important prototype for Legion M. Theatrical distribution is in a state of significant flux right now as the combined pressures of (a) at home streaming, (b) COVID, and (c) supply chain issues caused by COVID (i.e. the pipeline of new films) are causing many companies to rethink release strategies.
While this sort of disruption can wreak havoc on large entrenched players, it creates opportunities for smaller, innovative companies like Legion M. We're eager to see what we can do for not just this release, but other potential releases in the future. We're very interested to explore opportunities to work with Fathom, as well as studios like Warner Brothers, for the benefit of all.
Finally, it's worth noting that as a company Legion M LOVES getting people out to theaters. Movies are better with friends, and The Return of the King is a classic that deserves to be experienced on the big screen -- hopefully in a packed theater.
